I noted the other day that Chris Christie said she could not tell the truth about this (and other things) because she knows it will lose her votes. This has become the pattern for many politicians who depend upon (and have for decades) people who support racism and conspiracy theories about elections. If you were to take away the votes of those people many politicians know they could not win. So they know, but fear, the truth.
