Maybe, as the last to surrender, people might consider him the ultimate image of "the lost cause" in sticking it out until the very end. I'm wondering if there were confederate soldiers who hid out in places and did not hear of the end of the war for a long time as did Japanese soldiers after WWII had ended. Though it would have been easier for the Japanese given they were on islands with few, if any, other people and dug in deliberately to avoid discovery. But I wonder how Confederate soldiers might have done something similar though not for as long?
