Not to be too pedantic, but they were not called "The" Eagles at the outset. Their first album was just "Eagles." I'm guessing people found it awkward to say, "Het, did you hear about Eagles?" and stuck "the" in there. Take out "the" from all the other responses here and it's going to sound awkward, but "Eagles" by itself is what they chose.
