Texas Symposium on Software Engineering (2004) Notes

  • Long history in a lack of understanding of what the problems are.
  • Too many systems critically require 24/7 monitoring and response.
  • Generic sources of risks in SW: erroneous requirements, hw/sw flaws, over-endowed infallibility, poor human interfaces, over-dependence on SysAdmins, malicious/accidental misuse, privacy violations, environmental quirks, ….
  • Education/training seriously deficient with regard to systems
  • Trustworthy means what it says: worthy of trust. Trust is a belief in something’s trustworthiness.
  • Trust closely related to dependability, but may simply imply you have no other choice (or don’t know better). [DeMarco and Lister]
  • Believing in system infallibility seems foolish. [But does a typical user have any other data with which to question a system?]
