When I was in college, during the Civil Rights Era, I could watch the newsreels of the dogs attacking, the high pressured fire hoses, the beatings and the lynchings, and the hate directed towards black people. I could be "morally outraged" as I did so. about 25 years later we adopted our son. I can no longer watch those things (in newsreels or live TV) without anger and tears. I don't know how much good we were able to do for our son. He'd have to say that. But I know the good he did for me, though I can still think like a racist more than I wish.
