Years ago, Tom DeMarco noted that people ask, "Why does software cost so much?" He went on to say that this is really an implied statement, not a question. That is, software shouldn't cost so much. Your post title, "Why is modern software so bad?", seems to me to be the same thing. It's an implied statement that modern software should not be so bad.
